Le gaz de schiste a par exemple repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=907&amp;t=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">67\u00a0% de la production de gaz naturel sec en 2017<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Et l\u2019EIA pr\u00e9dit que le p\u00e9trole et le gaz de schiste fourniront encore <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/judeclemente\/2019\/01\/13\/u-s-shale-oil-and-natural-gas-underestimated-its-whole-life\/#1f031d574b59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">la moiti\u00e9 des ressources \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques en 2050<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Les ap\u00f4tres de l\u2019exploitation du gaz et du p\u00e9trole de schiste arguent qu\u2019elle permet d\u2019obtenir une \u00e9nergie plus propre que le p\u00e9trole conventionnel ou le charbon tout en investissant pendant ce temps-l\u00e0 dans les \u00e9nergies vertes. Les d\u00e9fenseurs de l\u2019environnement d\u00e9noncent, eux, ses cons\u00e9quences ravageuses\u00a0: destruction des paysages, pollution des eaux, s\u00e9ismes locaux, \u00e9mission de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre\u2026 Ce nouvel eldorado a, aussi, un co\u00fbt pour la sant\u00e9 (cancers, naissances pr\u00e9matur\u00e9es, impacts sur le syst\u00e8me nerveux et respiratoire\u2026) puisque 17 millions d\u2019Am\u00e9ricains vivent d\u00e9sormais <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Fracking_Science_Compendium_5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">\u00e0 moins de 1,6 kilom\u00e8tre d\u2019un puits de gaz ou de p\u00e9trole<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Pennsylvanie, Texas, Dakota du Nord\u2026 Les paysages de plusieurs \u00c9tats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9figur\u00e9s par les forages. Une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/348\/6233\/401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">dans la revue Science en 2015<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> estimait d\u00e9j\u00e0 que des millions d\u2019hectares de Grandes Plaines des \u00c9tats-Unis et du Canada \u00e9taient <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00ab\u00a0en train d\u2019\u00eatre transform\u00e9s en paysages industrialis\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00ab\u00a0C\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9chelle de cette transformation qui est importante, car l\u2019accumulation de la d\u00e9gradation des terres peut avoir un impact \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle continentale qu\u2019on ne peut pas d\u00e9tecter lorsqu\u2019on se focalise sur une seule r\u00e9gion\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, \u00e9crivent les auteurs. Ils font \u00e9tat d\u2019une <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00ab\u00a0perte directe de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> au profit, par exemple, de la construction de routes d\u2019acheminement d\u2019hydrocarbures. Entre 2000 et 2012, c\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9quivalent de plus de la moiti\u00e9 du p\u00e2turage annuel sur les terres publiques g\u00e9r\u00e9es par le Bureau de gestion du territoire am\u00e9ricain (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bureau_of_Land_Management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Bureau of Land Management<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">) qui a disparu. Sur les terres agricoles, la perte est \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 120,2 millions de boisseaux de bl\u00e9, soit environ 6\u00a0% du bl\u00e9 produit en 2013 dans le Midwest. Les auteurs ont \u00e9galement estim\u00e9 les cons\u00e9quences sur la vie sauvage\u00a0: voies migratoires chamboul\u00e9es, comportement et mortalit\u00e9 de la faune modifi\u00e9s, plantes invasives encourag\u00e9es \u00e0 s\u2019implanter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Autre co\u00fbt environnemental\u00a0: la pollution des eaux, engendr\u00e9e par la technique utilis\u00e9e depuis la fin des ann\u00e9es 1990 pour extraire le p\u00e9trole et le gaz de schiste, appel\u00e9e fracturation hydraulique (ou <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>fracking<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">). Pour briser la roche enfouie sous terre, il faut une quantit\u00e9 ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nale d\u2019eau et de produits chimiques inject\u00e9s \u00e0 forte pression. Le pompage sur place de cette ressource ou son importation depuis des lacs ou des rivi\u00e8res d\u2019autres \u00c9tats menace les r\u00e9serves d\u2019eau potable. Des fuites risquent de polluer les nappes phr\u00e9atiques, et le stockage des eaux us\u00e9es ainsi que leur transport sont eux aussi des sources de pollution potentielle. Le probl\u00e8me n\u2019a fait qu\u2019\u00e9voluer avec le temps. Une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e dans Sciences Advances a conclu que les entreprises de forage ont utilis\u00e9 770\u00a0% d\u2019eau suppl\u00e9mentaire par puits entre 2011 et 2016. Cons\u00e9quence\u00a0: une augmentation de 1 440\u00a0% d\u2019<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2018\/08\/the-amount-of-toxic-wastewater-produced-by-fracking-is-unbelievable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">eaux us\u00e9es toxiques rel\u00e2ch\u00e9es<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">En d\u00e9cembre 2016, l\u2019Agence de protection de l\u2019environnement am\u00e9ricaine (EPA) elle-m\u00eame avait admis que la fracturation hydraulique pouvait mener \u00e0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/cfpub.epa.gov\/ncea\/hfstudy\/recordisplay.cfm?deid=332990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">polluer les ressources en eau potable<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00ab\u00a0De nombreux chemins de contamination sont d\u00e9sormais prouv\u00e9s, et les cas observ\u00e9s \u00e0 travers le pays montrent que ces cons\u00e9quences sont communes et in\u00e9vitables\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, indique <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Fracking_Science_Compendium_5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">un rapport publi\u00e9 en 2018<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> par deux organisations de professionnels de sant\u00e9 (Concerned Health Professionals of NY et Physicians for Social Responsability). En Pennsylvanie, un solvant utilis\u00e9 lors de la fracturation hydraulique a \u00e9t\u00e9 retrouv\u00e9 dans des puits d\u2019eau potable situ\u00e9s pr\u00e8s d\u2019op\u00e9rations de forage. Autre exemple\u00a0: des chercheurs ont trouv\u00e9 19 contaminants \u2014 dont du benz\u00e8ne, canc\u00e9rog\u00e8ne \u2014 dans des \u00e9chantillons d\u2019eau pr\u00e9lev\u00e9s pr\u00e8s de la formation de schiste de Barnett, au Texas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Une nu\u00e9e de petits s\u00e9ismes au Texas proviendrait de lignes de failles o\u00f9 de l\u2019eau a \u00e9t\u00e9 inject\u00e9e<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Le m\u00eame rapport a compil\u00e9 plusieurs \u00e9tudes sur les s\u00e9ismes locaux attribu\u00e9s \u00e0 la fracturation hydraulique\u00a0: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u00ab\u00a0Une \u00e9tude de 2017 du bassin de Fort Worth a montr\u00e9 qu\u2019une nu\u00e9e r\u00e9cente de petits s\u00e9ismes dans le nord du Texas provenait de lignes de failles longtemps inactives dans des formations rocheuses profondes o\u00f9 de l\u2019eau us\u00e9e \u00e9tait inject\u00e9e\u00a0; l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine est la seule explication plausible.\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Toujours selon ce rapport, on apprend que\u00a0:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00ab\u00a0Le nombre de tremblements de terre de magnitude 3.0 ou plus est mont\u00e9 en fl\u00e8che en Oklahoma depuis le d\u00e9but du boom de la fracturation hydraulique, avec moins de deux s\u00e9ismes par an avant 2009 et plus de 900 rien qu\u2019en 2015.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane (95\u00a0% du gaz naturel) sont \u00e9galement montr\u00e9es du doigt. Ce gaz \u00e0 effet de serre est en effet <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reporterre.net\/Le-methane-croit-de-maniere-alarmante-dans-l-atmosphere\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">25 fois plus puissant que le CO<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0563c1;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u><sub><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">2<\/span><\/span><\/sub><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Comic Sans MS, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Or les experts estiment qu\u2019environ 4\u00a0% du m\u00e9thane lib\u00e9r\u00e9 lors du forage s\u2019\u00e9chappe dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re. Dans la formation de schiste de Barnett, au Texas, les \u00e9missions de m\u00e9thane ont \u00e9t\u00e9 50\u00a0% plus importantes qu\u2019estim\u00e9es par l\u2019EPA.
